“Coffee” is uncountable — say some coffee or a cup of coffee, not “a coffee” in formal writing. But in cafés, ordering “a coffee, please” is normal and natural.
Saying “a coffee” when you mean a packet
✗ I bought a coffee at the shop. (meaning a bag of coffee beans)
✓ I bought some coffee at the shop. (a bag of coffee beans)
Easy way to remember: coffee is a liquid drink. In a café, “a coffee” = one cup, OK. In a supermarket, “a coffee” sounds wrong — say some coffee.
