How to Use These Words

Drink words are usually uncountable, so do not use a or an: I drink water. She likes tea. To count drinks, use a cup of or a glass of: a cup of coffee, a glass of milk, a glass of juice.

Each Drink, One at a Time

Here is each drink on its own: what it is, three example sentences and the mistake to avoid. Use the flashcards above to practise them together.

Step 1: Water

Water is a clear drink with no taste. People need water to live — it is the most important drink in the world.

Examples:

  • Please drink water. (an instruction)
  • I drink water with every meal. (a habit)
  • The water is cold. (describing it)

Common mistake

Saying “a water” in everyday English

✗ I want a water, please.
✓ I want some water, please.

Step 2: Milk

Milk is a white drink. It usually comes from cows, but you can also buy plant milk (from soya, oats, or almonds). People drink milk cold or put it in tea or coffee.

Examples:

  • I drink milk in the morning. (a habit)
  • She puts milk in her tea. (adding to a drink)
  • The milk is cold. (describing it)

Common mistake

Saying “a milk”

✗ I want a milk, please.
✓ I want some milk, please.

Step 3: Juice

Juice is a sweet drink made from fruit. People drink orange juice, apple juice, or other fruit juices, often at breakfast.

Examples:

  • I drink orange juice with breakfast. (a daily habit)
  • She has apple juice after school. (after school)
  • The juice is cold and sweet. (describing it)

Step 4: Tea

Tea is a hot drink made by putting tea leaves in hot water. People drink tea with milk, with sugar, or just on its own. Tea is the most popular hot drink in many countries.

Examples:

  • My mother drinks tea. (every day)
  • I have tea with milk. (how I drink it)
  • The tea is hot. (describing temperature)

Common mistake

Mixing up tea (the drink) and tea (the leaves)

✗ I bought a tea at the supermarket.
✓ I bought some tea at the supermarket.

Step 5: Coffee

Coffee is a hot brown drink. It is strong and bitter, but many people love it because it helps them wake up in the morning.

Examples:

  • I drink coffee in the morning. (every morning)
  • She has coffee with milk. (how she drinks it)
  • The coffee is too hot. (describing temperature)

Common mistake

Saying “a coffee” when you mean a packet

✗ I bought a coffee at the shop. (meaning a bag of coffee beans)
✓ I bought some coffee at the shop. (a bag of coffee beans)
