compose

To make up or form a whole. The PARTS compose the whole.

Quick Answer

Compose means to make up or form. The parts compose the whole. Three short stories compose a book. Eighty musicians compose an orchestra. Picture small pieces building up into one bigger thing.

Example: Three short stories compose her latest book.

Compose in 3 Sentences

Read these three sentences. Notice how compose is used:

  • Three short stories compose her latest book. (stories = parts; book = whole)
  • Iron, oxygen, and silicon compose most of the Earth’s crust. (elements = parts; crust = whole)
  • Twelve members compose the committee. (members = parts; committee = whole)

A Quick Tip About COMPOSE

Compose always starts the sentence with the parts. Its sister verb comprise goes the other way — it starts with the whole. “Twelve members compose the committee.” “The committee comprises twelve members.” Same fact, opposite direction.

Reversing the direction

The committee composes twelve members.
Twelve members compose the committee.

Easy way to remember: Compose = parts Construct (build up). The PARTS come first in the sentence, then the verb compose, then the whole. Picture three Lego bricks composing a tower.
