fish
/fish/

An animal that lives in water, or food from this animal.

Quick Answer

A fish is an animal that lives in water. People also eat fish — the food is also called fish. The word “fish” is the same for one or many.

Example: He eats fish with rice.

Fish in 3 Sentences

Read these three sentences. Notice how fish is used:

  • He eats fish with rice. (the food)
  • There are two fish in the lake. (two animals — same form)
  • A fish swims. (one animal)

A Quick Tip About FISH

“Fish” is special — it’s the same in singular and plural. Say one fish AND two fish, never “two fishes”. As food (the meat), say fish, not “a fish”.

Saying “two fishes”

I see two fishes in the water.
I see two fish in the water.

Easy way to remember: one fish, two fish, three fish, ten fish. The word never changes for plural. Like sheep — one sheep, two sheep.
