chicken
/CHIK-in/

A bird, or meat from this bird.

Quick Answer

A chicken is a small farm bird. People also eat its meat β€” and we call that meat chicken too. So “chicken” can mean the bird OR the food.

Example: We have chicken for dinner.

Chicken in 3 Sentences

Read these three sentences. Notice how chicken is used:

  • We have chicken for dinner. (the food)
  • A chicken lays eggs. (the bird)
  • I like chicken with rice. (eating it)

A Quick Tip About CHICKEN

“Chicken” works two ways. As the BIRD, it is countable: a chicken, two chickens. As the FOOD (the meat), it is uncountable: some chicken, not “a chicken”.

Saying “a chicken” when you mean the food

I eat a chicken for dinner.
I eat chicken for dinner.

Easy way to remember: if you can put it on your plate as food, just say chicken. If it’s a live bird walking around, say a chicken.
