Personal Pronoun WE — How to Talk About Yourself and Others

Quick Answer

Use we when you and at least one other person are the subject — when you and your group are doing the action together.

Example: We live in London. (My family/friends and I.)

WE in Action — See the Pattern

Read these three sentences. Look at how it works:

  • We are friends. (Me and you, or me and others.)
  • We live near the park. (We are the subject — we do the living.)
  • We work in the same office. (Me and my colleagues.)

When to Use WE

We is the subject pronoun for yourself plus at least one other person. “We” goes before the verb. The verb does NOT add -s with “we” (it stays in its base form, like with I/you/they).

  • Yourself plus your family: “We are eating dinner.”
  • Yourself plus friends: “We are going to the cinema.”
  • Yourself plus colleagues: “We work in the same team.”
  • Yourself plus your country/team: “We won the match.”

Easy way to remember: We = me + at least one other person, doing the action. Subject. Verb stays in base form (no -s).

The Rule in One Line: Use we when you and others are the subject.

Real-Life Examples With WE

Here are examples you might say or hear in everyday life:

  • We live in a small flat. (Me and my family.)
  • We are going to the cinema tonight. (Me and my friends.)
  • We have two cats and a dog. (Me and the people I live with.)
  • We are studying English together. (Me and my classmates.)
  • We won the match 2-1. (Me and my team.)

You are doing great. Now let’s look at the mistakes many learners make.

Three Mistakes to Avoid With WE

The biggest mix-up is using “us” as the subject. “Us go to the park” is wrong. “Us” comes after the verb. The subject is always “we.” Also be careful: “our” shows ownership (our house) — different word, different job.

Using us as the subject

Us live in London.
We live in London.

Using our as the subject

Our are friends.
We are friends.

Adding +s with “we”

We works in the same office.
We work in the same office.

How to remember: We = me + others, doing the action. Subject. Verb stays plain — no -s.

Common “we” sentences: We are, We have, We live, We work, We like, We go.

Keep Going — You Are Building Something

You just learned we — the subject pronoun for every group you belong to. Family, friends, colleagues, sports teams — “we” pulls them all together with you.

But “we” only works when the group is doing the action. The moment something happens to the group — someone calls us, invites us, or sends us flowers — “we” stops working. There is one short word that takes over for the whole crew.
