Preposition IN — When and How to Use It
Quick Answer
Use in when something is inside a space — a box, a room, a country, a bag. If you can imagine walls or sides around it, use in.
Example: The book is in the bag. (The book is inside the bag.)
IN in Action — See the Pattern
Read these three sentences. Look at how in works:
- The keys are in my pocket. (The keys are inside the pocket.)
- She lives in London. (London is a place — she is inside it.)
- There is milk in the cup. (The milk is inside the cup.)
When to Use IN
Use in when something is surrounded by walls, sides, or a border. Think of a container — anything that can hold something else.
- Inside a room: “My phone is in the kitchen.”
- Inside a container: “The cookies are in the jar.”
- Inside a place on the map: “Tokyo is in Japan.”
- Inside a vehicle (car, taxi): “He is in the car.”
Easy way to remember: If you can put a lid on top of it, the thing is in it. A bag, a box, a cup, a room — all have walls. So we say in the bag, in the box, in the cup, in the room.
The Rule in One Line: Use in when something is inside a space with sides or walls.

But here is a question: if I have a book in the bag, where is the bag? Probably on the table. \”In\” and \”on\” sound similar but they are not the same. Do you know exactly when to use on?
