Relative Clauses Practice

B1 · Relative clauses

Relative clauses: keep it or drop it?

Learn when you can leave out who, that or which — then drill it until it sticks.

The rule

Look at the one word right after who / that / which:

  • Is it a verb? Then the pronoun is the subject → you must keep it.
    The teacher who inspired me…
  • Is it a new subject (a name, a noun, or a word like I, we, she, the storm)? Then the pronoun is the object → you can drop it.
    The teacher who I admired… → The teacher I admired…
