desert
/DEH-zert/

A large, dry area of land with very little rain, often covered in sand — like the Sahara.

Quick Answer

A desert (one s) is a dry, sandy place where almost no rain falls. Say it DEH-zert, with the stress at the front. Think: sand, sun, camels.

Example: The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world.

Desert in 3 Sentences

Read these three sentences. Notice how desert is used:

  • The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world. (a huge sandy place)
  • Very few plants grow in the desert. (because there is almost no water)
  • They watched the sun set over the desert. (the dry, open land)

A Quick Tip About DESERT

Desert is the twin of dessert (the sweet food) — one letter apart. Desert has one s; dessert has two. The stress is different too: DEH-zert (sand) vs dih-ZERT (cake).

Adding a second s when you mean the sandy place

The camels walked across the dessert.
The camels walked across the desert.

Easy way to remember: the desert is Sandy — just one s. (The sweet one gets a second helping.)
