What’s the Plural of Man: Understanding Singular and Plural Nouns

Quick Answer
The plural of man is men. You do not add -s. The letter in the middle of the word changes.
One: There is one man outside.
More than one: There are three men outside.
Man Becomes Men — See the Pattern
Look at these words. Can you see what happens?
- one man → two men
- one woman → two women
- one tooth → two teeth
- one foot → two feet
Did you see the pattern? These words do not add -s or -es. The sound inside the word changes. These are called irregular plurals.
| One (singular) | More than one (plural) |
|---|---|
| man | men |
| woman | women |
| tooth | teeth |
| foot | feet |
Why You Cannot Say “Mans”
Most English words add -s to become plural. For example: cat → cats, book → books, dog → dogs.
But man is different. It is one of the oldest words in English. Instead of adding -s, the letter in the middle changes:
- man → men
The a becomes an e. That is it. The rest of the word stays the same.
This also works in compound words (words made from two words joined together):
- fireman → firemen
- policeman → policemen
- businessman → businessmen
- gentleman → gentlemen
Easy way to remember: Any word that ends in -man changes to -men in the plural. The pattern is always the same.
The Rule in One Line: One man, two or more men — never “mans.”
How to Use Man and Men in Everyday English
- A man helped me carry my bags. (just one person)
- Three men were playing football in the park. (more than one)
- The men in my family are all very tall. (a group)
- That man is waiting for the bus. (just one)
- How many men signed up for the class? (asking about a group)
You are doing great. Now let’s look at the mistakes many learners make with this word.
Two Mistakes to Avoid With Man
Even advanced learners sometimes write “mans” or mix up “man” and “men” — so if you have made this mistake before, you are not alone. Even native speakers’ children say “mans” when they are learning to talk!
✗ There were three mans at the door.
✓ There were three men at the door.
✗ All the man were ready to start.
✓ All the men were ready to start.
✗ He is a kind men.
✓ He is a kind man.
How to remember: Look at the letter in the middle. Man = one. Men = more than one. If you are talking about one person, you need the a. If you are talking about a group, you need the e.
Other words that change inside instead of adding -s: woman → women, tooth → teeth, foot → feet, goose → geese, mouse → mice.

But here is something interesting. The word child is also irregular — but it does not follow the same pattern as man. You do not just change a letter in the middle. The ending changes in a way most people do not expect. Can you guess what the plural of child is?
